Reflecting on 2023: A Remarkable Journey Together

What a wild ride 2023 was, and we're thrilled you were along for the adventure! Your Soil and Water Conservation District has been hard at work, and we're excited to share our achievements.

Grant Funding Success: We're grateful for the support that allowed us to secure over $200,000 in grant funding. This financial boost enabled us to undertake various impactful projects:

  1. Buckets to Healthy Soil Expansion: In 2023, we expanded our Buckets to Healthy Soil composting program to Caribou, and in 2024, we're set to extend it to Fort Fairfield.

  2. Tree Research for Forests and Wildlife: Our ongoing research focuses on disease-resistant American Beech and American Chestnut trees, contributing to the well-being of our forests and wildlife.

  3. New Handbooks: We've written and published three new handbooks:

    • "A Not So Common Guide to the Not So Common Wildflowers in Aroostook County."

    • "Forest Trees and Shrubs in Aroostook County."

    • "A Guide to Common Apple Varieties and Their Care in Aroostook County."

  4. Watershed Management Plan: We crafted a comprehensive Watershed Management Plan for the tributaries of the Lower Aroostook River, from the convergence of the Presque Isle Stream to the Canadian Border.

  5. Workforce Expansion: To accomplish our goals, we've hired six dedicated technicians to join our team.

National Recognition: Our efforts garnered attention at the Regional NACD Conference in Portland, Maine, last September. The National Association of Conservation Districts invited us to deliver two one-hour presentations. We made valuable connections with individuals as far away as West Virginia.

Looking Forward to 2024: Exciting times lie ahead, and we're eager to see what 2024 brings. We invite you to join us again this year by renewing your dues and participating in our activities.

Support Our Cause: As we continue to strive for excellence, we rely on the generosity of our community. Your donations as a cooperator will enable us to fund essential projects and sustain our commitment to environmental conservation. Visit our revised website, www.CASWCD.org, or check out our Facebook page at Central Aroostook SWCD for a detailed list of events and activities.

Stay Connected: If you have any questions or simply want to chat conservation, feel free to reach out to us. Your engagement makes a difference, and we look forward to another impactful year together!
